Makerere University, Uganda

Makerere University (MU) is Uganda's largest and third-oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922. Makerere is the only university in Uganda offering degree level training in the various agricultural disciplines. Makerere University is, therefore, the leading institution in the country in the area of agricultural human resource development.

The SAFE at Makerere University was established in 1996 to support and contribute towards agricultural development efforts of Uganda through the production of qualified human resource in the field of agricultural extension advisory services who can serve the needs of smallholder farm families.

The Mid-career B.Sc. degree program at Makerere University has made contribution to the agricultural sector principally through upgrading the technical and human relations skills of experienced Mid-career extension staff working with the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries and Non-governmental organizations engaged in agricultural advisory services.

The new value chain-oriented curriculum has been launched at Makerere University starting 2013 academic year. While the old curriculum was production-focused, the revised curriculum has a strong component of value addition.
