Jimma University, Ethiopia

 

 

Jimma University (JU) is a public higher educational institution established in December 1999 by the amalgamation of Jimma College of Agriculture (founded in 1952), and Jimma Institute of Health Sciences (established in 1983). Jimma University is located 335 km southwest of Addis Ababa with an area of 167 hectares.

 

Jimma is one of the ten universities in Ethiopia which is implementing the program in Oromia region. Having approved the new value chain oriented curriculum, the university admitted the first batch of 27 students in 2013 academic year.

 

Jimma University launched the SAFE program in 2013 academic year using its own resources.

The launching of the program at Jimma University was followed by mid-career program stakeholders workshop in April 2013, which was crucial for introducing the program to all the university departments involved in teaching the program and to agree on implementation modalities. The workshop also provided a platform for university communities and employers to consolidate their partnership in the program.

 

Purpose of the SAFE program at Jimma University is to contribute towards the agricultural development efforts of the Ethiopia through the production of qualified human resource in the field of agricultural extension advisory services who can serve the needs of smallholder farm families.

The second intake students of the mid-career program at Jimma University graduated in July 2016. The program has completed four cycles of intakes. Currently, 70 mid-career students (61 males and 9 females) are enrolled at the university.

Vision 2020

Effective extension delivery systems in Sub-Saharan Africa that are based on farmer needs and demands along the entire agricultural value chain, with a special focus on smallholder farmers, most of whom are women.

SAFE Mission

Strengthening agricultural education institutions in sub-Saharan Africa to provide demand driven, value chain oriented, training for mid-career agricultural advisory workers.
